Before entering the exhibition, visitors pass Lotte Laserstein‘s large-scale painting Abend über Potsdam (Evening over Potsdam). This shows a private gathering, the mood bursting with melancholy, which can be interpreted as representing the impending world economic crisis and the rise of the National Socialists.
And the first work of art that awaits us in the exhibition room is the film by Adolf Trotz Stadt der Millionen. It deals – humorously, lightly and playfully entertained – with the industrialization and gives an outlook on how he imagined Berlin for the year 2000, in 1925.
Trotz was born in 1895 in Janów, Upper Silesia, now Poland. The Nazi takeover ended his career as a film director and screenwriter. He subsequently lived and worked in Spain and Italy, where his trail was lost in Rome in the summer of 1937.
Lotte Laserstein, *1898 in Prussian Holland in the East Prussian Oberland – 1993 in Kalmar, Sweden, specialized in portrait painting and is considered an important representative of the art of the Weimar Republic.
Wer die Ausstellung betritt, passiert zuvor Lotte Lasursteins großformatiges Gemälde Abend über Potsdam. Dieses zeigt ein privates Zusammensein bei welchem die allgemeine Stimmung von Melancholie getragen wird, was dahingehend gewertet werden kann, dass diese die bevorstehende Weltwirtschaftskrise und den Aufstieg der Nationalsozialisten repräsentiert.
Und das erste was uns im Ausstellungsraum erwartet, ist der Film von Adolf Trotz Stadt der Millionen. Er thematisiert – humoristisch, leicht und spielerisch entertained – die Industrialisierung und gibt Ausblicke dazu, wie er sich 1925 Berlin im Jahr 2000 vorstellte.
Trotz wurde 1895 in Janów, Oberschlesien, heute Polen geboren, die Machtübernahme der Nationalsozialisten beendete seine Karriere als Filmregisseur und Drehbuchautor. Er lebte und arbeitete in der Folge in Spanien und Italien, wo sich in Rom im Sommer 1937 seine Spur verliert.
Lotte Laserstein, *1898 in Preußisch Holland im ostpreußischen Oberland — 1993 in Kalmar, Schweden, war spezialisiert auf Porträtmalerei und gilt als bedeutende Vertreterin der Malerei der Weimarer Republik.
