Seen @ Cavalier Gallery . 530 West 24th Street, New York, NY . May, 2023 . Never Grow Up . Paintings by Adam Umbach
Flamingos, butterflies, and rubber ducks.
And dragons, as if they were built from Lego bricks.
Painted.
In dominant colors.
Make us longing. Back to childhood, please!
The magic of what used to be.
Seducing! So! Sweet!
Und „many of us who have lost loved ones slip into a kind grief psychosis in which we feel relatives visiting us from the astral plane or find some greater metaphysical meaning in unlikely creatures.“
Adam presents his lovely subjects, „bestowed by the brilliant background of expressionistic blooms and precisely outlined floral wallpaper scenes on which they lay“.
Everywhere, autobiographical symbols of Adams memories can be found.
The boat trips with his family.
The Summertimes in Maine.
Even if everything the artist paints, looks joyful at first side, there’s a darker undertone you can feel in some of his works, if you’re able to read between the lines ..
Feel the melancholy of Lana del Rey’s songs, and play with the colors and forms Adam used that „seems to be a holdover from earlier in life when we’re unbothered by tradition, convention, or whatever we’re taught in grad school“.
So:
Make a wish!
Paint what you like,
Do what you love,
Marry me for U.S. citizenship,
And never ever grow up!
